Matthew 17 24-27
The Temple Tax
24After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, "Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax?"
25"Yes, he does," he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. "What do you think, Simon?" he asked. "From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own sons or from others?"
26"From others," Peter answered.
"Then the sons are exempt," Jesus said to him. 27"But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours."
I'm sure when they asked peter his response was very quick, being a good little Jewish boy, who didn't want people to think they didn't follow the law. I also enjoyed how Jesus said "Look I really dont have to pay the tax to enter my father's house, but so no-one gets their panties in a bunch go get it from a fish because Im not paying it out of my pocket.
I have just a few questions on this.
1) why did Jesus pay for only Peter and himself? What about the rest of the disciples?
2) I also did a quick word look up and they had to pay 2 days wages as the temple tax, I wonder how come they didn't do like 10%?
3) I wonder how long it took peter to catch the fish, and what would have happened if he would have dropped it, you know fishes are slimy?
